Aussie team Ranjhe emerged as the champions of the inaugural RedDot Bhangra Competition in Singapore today (23 June).
The all-male six member team took the dance floor along with five other teams from four nations.
“They were good. Really clean execution. But it was very close to the next team,” fellow competitor Jasdeep Singh from Malaysia told Asia Samachar.
Jasdeep led Silver State Bhangra Crew, the only Malaysian team at the competition. However, he could not perform to his full ability due to an injury just the day before.
RedDot Bhangra Competition 2018, the first international bhangra competition organised by RedDot Bhangra, captivated a 600-strong crowd at Gateway Theatre.
The sell-out event with its dynamic and high-energy dance sets was a feast for the eyes and ears.
Energetic and lively dancers from six teams across four countries – India, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore – brought their A-game and danced their hearts out.
Bhangra is a dance form that originated from Punjab, India, performed to celebrate the annual harvest. Bhangra has evolved over the years and today, the teams showcased bhangra at its best.
True to their name, Bhangra Till Last Breath from India gave it their all with their unique blend of traditional moves and unconventional props.
The explosively energetic moves of Singapore team Yaar Panj-aab Phangra set the stage aflame. Silver State Bhangra Crew from Malaysia turned up the heat despite being the smallest team to compete.
Ranjhe from Australia lit up the stage with their dynamic moves.
Singapore’s SherePunjab Bhangra erupted on stage and kept their energy level high throughout their performance, much to the delight of the enthralled audience.
Joshiley Bhangra from Singapore drove the audience wild when they redefined precision with their crisp and high-powered moves.
“This competition has simultaneously raised the bar for the bhangra circuit in Singapore, as well as brought the community together to experience the joy that is bhangra. Over 100 participants worked to put this event together and we are already setting the gears in motion for next year’s Competition!” said RedDot Bhangra Competition Event Director Hargobind Singh.
Among the audience were 10 residents of Sunlove Abode for Intellectually-Infirmed, a charity that RedDot Bhangra supports through its community outreach programme.
RedDot Bhangra is a volunteer-run group that is dedicated to providing a platform for youth to engage with their roots and heritage through the main dance form of Punjabi culture.
The multi-racial group also aims to foster understanding and harmony among diverse groups in Singapore through sharing the joy of bhangra.
