Singapore IP ace lawyer Dedar Singh Gill made judicial commissioner

Singapore’s ace intellectual property (IP) litigator Dedar Singh Gill will join the republic’s Supreme Court as a judicial commissioner.

Dedar, the managing director for IP at Singapore-based law firm Drew & Napier LLC, will be sworn in on Aug 3 at the Istana Negara. His two-year appointment is effective 1 August 2018.

“The President of the Republic of Singapore, on the advice of the Prime Minister has appointed Mr. Dedar Singh Gill as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore under Article 95(4) (a) of the Constitution” according to a statement released yesterday by the Prime Minister’s Office.

With the appointment, the statement added that the Supreme Court will have a total of 21 judges (including four judges of appeal and the chief justice), six judicial commissioners, four senior judges and 15 international judges.

Dedar has been described as a leading practitioner for all aspects of IP work, particularly in intellectual property litigation including patents, trade marks, copyright and design infringement, passing off and breach of confidential information.

He has 30 years of legal experience and has been recognised in industry publications as one of Singapore’s top IP practitioners, according to his profile at the law firm’s website.

The 59-year old lawyer is one of six Drew & Napier’s management committee members headed by its executive chairman Davinder Singh.

Dedar graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (2nd Class Upper Honours) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1983.

Since graduation, he has been practising with Messrs. Drew & Napier LLC, except for a 1-year stint with Messrs. Harry Elias, the field of IP, according to the PMO statement.

He has appeared as counsel before the High Court and Court of Appeal for major corporate clients and has established a considerable reputation for his expertise and experience in intellectual property law, it added.
