Malaysian-born Sandeep Singh hopes the win at the UK-based Mr Asian Beauty Pageant 2016 will spur his fortunes at modelling.
The 22-year old accounting and finance student emerged tops in the competition, now into its second year, held in Birmingham in June.
“I modelled from the age of 16 but had stopped when I started my degree. I had decided several months before the application date to start modelling, but was looking for a way to penetrate the industry effectively. The pageant was a good way,” he told Asia Samachar when asked what took him to the pageant competition.
Sandeep emerged as Mr Asian Beauty Pageant 2016 while Harpreet Kaur bagged Mrs Asian Beauty Pageant 2016.
Sandeep was born in Ipoh, Perak, studied in Malaysia till Year 6 (UPSR) before moving to the Leeds, UK. He is currently in the final year of the degree programme at Kingston University. His surgeon dad Dr Charanjit Singh lives in Taiping, Perak, while his mum is a retired nurse living in Ipoh.
The event, the Star Media and Marketing Ltd, starts with an audition involving a catwalk and an interview by a panel of celebrity judges. Fourteen finalists make it to the next round where they are required to produce a video for public voting and a charity plan.
“Round Three involved interacting with the media where I had been invited on several radio shows including BBC One, B4U and Punjab Radio,” he said.
The final round was the catwalk, questions by the host and a talent round where the finalists were judged by celebrity judges including Mandy Thakar and Jasmin Walia.
Asked on his plans next, Sandeep said: “I want to complete my degree and see what opportunities come along the way. I’m looking to gain as much as I can from the whole thing.”
