A British photographer duo are turning to crowd funding via the Kickstarter platform to raise funds for a proposed coffee-table book of high quality photos of British and American Sikhs.
What began as a collection of 36 photographs of British Sikh men by the duo of Amit and Naroop in 2013 has taken a life of its own. They held a series of successful exhibitions in the UK.
They then collaborated with US-based The Sikh Coalition to photograph Sikh men and women in that country, now on display at a 9-day exhibition at 530 Broadway, New York City, till tomorrow (25 Sept 2016).
Next, the duo intend to publish a book, for which they are appealing to people to buy the book ahead as part of its funding strategy. They plan to raise £46,260 (about RM248,000 / S$82,000) via fund raising platform Kickstarter. See here.
“We had never seen high quality, studio portrait of Sikhs before. By creating the Singh Project, puting on the exhibition and now this book, we believe people will be able to enjoy the images for generations to come,” said Naroop in a video prepared for the Kickstarter campaign.
“We were able to break down the strereotypes and show the beauty and diversity of the Sikh men,” said Amit in the same video. We want these images to be remembered and celebrated….We hope to encourage Sikhs and non-Sikhs to realise how important their identity is.”
The duo’s first UK shoot was featured by Asia Samachar in a 2014 news report entitled Perfect pose.
With 16 days to go, the duo have received pledges amounting to £6,300. They need receive pledges minimum pledges of £46,260 for by 10 Oct for the project to go ahead.
If the project succeeds in reaching its funding goal, all backers’ credit cards will be charged when time expires. If the project falls short, no one is charged. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, according to information on Kickstarter website.
For a £10 pledge, you get you name and town mentioned in the thank you section of the book. For £50, you get the mention plus a copy of the book delivered to you anywhere in the world.
If you go for the Diamond Deal, with a pledge of £1,000 and more, you even get a two hour photo shoot with the British duo at their London studio, followed by lunch.
