The gurdwara at Tanjung Tualang Sikh Settlement, about 40km south of Ipoh, was hit by floods after days of non-stop rain. The gurdwara was last hit by monsoon floods in 1999.
“Some of the houses in the neighbourhood were already flooded yesterday. This morning, the water rose further and went into the darbar sahib,” the gurdwara secretary Ranjit Singh told Asia Samachar in a telephone conversation today.
The gurdwara, in the state of Perak, serves a small Sikh community in the area. It is understood that most of the neighbouring areas were spared of flooding as they are located on a higher ground.
The gurdwara’s langgar hall was not damaged by the floods and can still be used.
“The last flooding at the gurdwara was some 17 years ago. Back then, we had so many naujawans to help in moving things out of harm’s way. This time around, most of our naujawans are working in places far away,” said one resident.
It is understood that gurdwara management committee has plans to renovate the gurdwara but the plans are still in the initial stage.
In December 2014, a 81-year old gurdwara in a small Malaysian town of Kuala Krai, in the Malaysian state of Kelantan, was sub-merged in a flash flood that had hit a number of other states as well.
The gurdwara – serving two Sikh families and more than a dozen foreign workers from Punjab – was under 50-feet of water on Dec 24, 2014.
Kuala Krai is about 70km from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and 380km from Kuala Lumpur.
