This was his first taste of degh in 13 years.
Now, that’s a long break for a Sikh to enjoy this delicious offering we take for granted every time we visit the gurdwara. So tasty is the degh that some go for a second helping in the same sitting.
But not for this particular person – one of 29 Sikhs serving time at the Malaysian prison at Sungai Buloh, Selangor.
“He even recited the ardaas (supplication),” said one team members who visited the Sikh inmates on Saturday (22 April 2017) as part of the Vaisakhi celebration.

The maiden trip to the Sungai Buloh Prison was led by Sikh Welfare Society Malaysia (SWSM) which has been making regular visits to the Kajang Prison.
Joining the eight-person team was SWSM president Tarlochan Singh Dhaliwal, Malaysian Sikh Union (MSU) president Dr Karpal Singh Pannu and Wadda Gurdwara Kampung Pandan president Jasbir Singh.
Tarlochan said the prison visits were one of the main projects of the current committee in line with one of its core objectives of providing assistance to our needy members of the Sikh society.
“The inmates had requested the society to continue with this project and come at least once a month as other religious bodies are coming weekly joy seen in their eyes left the sewadars having tears of joy,” one of the team members told Asia Samachar.
The latest visit was supported by Wadda Gurdwara Kampung Pandan, Gurdwara Sahib Petaling Jaya, Niketan Foundation, MSU and Gurdwara Guru Nanak Shah Alam.
The program included counselling, recitation of Gurbani followed by ardaas and dheg. Degh sponsored by Gurdwara Sahib Shah Alam.
SWSM hopes more volunteers will register to join future prison visits.
“We got two volunteers during our last request. We hope more will come forward,” said SWSM secretary Charanbir Singh Aujla. To join the volunteer group, call Charanbir at 0162789964.
