The annual Sikh games for Malaysia and Singapore kicked off in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The 66th Gurdwara Cup and Sikh Festival of Sports, a four-day festival of various inter-state games, will run until 10 June.
For the first time, the games were hosted by the Sikhs in the Malaysian police force.
“This is the first time the Gurdwara Cup and the Sikh Festival of Sports is hosted by the police, more specifically by the Royal Malaysian Police Sikh Sports Association (RMPSSA).
“For this, I would like to congratulate the president Datuk Nashatar Singh and all the committee members and members, both retired and serving, and their family members, for the untiring efforts,” said Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh at the opening of the games at Kelab Aman, yesterday.
Nashatar, a retired police officer and a former Olympian, is the president of Royal Malaysian Police Sikh Sports Association (RMPSSA)
The games are organised by the Malaysian-Singapore Sikh Sports Council (MSSSC).
The games were officiated by Malaysian Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports M Saravanan.
At the games last year, Kuala Lumpur emerged overall champions, nudging defending champions Perak. Kuala Lumpur also took home the Gurdwara Cup trophy for hockey.
Last year, some 1,000 participants and officials took part in the games held in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
