Group disrupts Inder Singh Ghagaa programe in Ipoh

LEFT: Prof Inder Singh Ghagaa. Right: A Sikh seemingly heckling down the granthi who tried to speak at the Greentown gurdwara programme, as seen in a video shared on the social media

A group of Sikhs, largely from Kuala Lumpur, disrupted a lecture session by author and preacher Prof Inder Singh Ghagaa at an Ipoh gurdwara gurdwara this evening (1 March 2017) by loudly chanting ‘Satnam Waheguru’ in the darbar sahib.

Towards the end of the session at Gurdwara Sahib Greentown, a few youth were alleged to have attacked the speaker and a gurdwara official.

“After degh, some youth attacked one gurdwara official, causing his turban to be removed.

“Another attacked Ghagaa, pulling his beard and also causing his turban to be removed,” one eye witness told Asia Samachar in a telephone conversation.

The official was Greentown gurdwara management committee (GMC) deputy president Jagjit Singh.

“The programme was disrupted by the group that was largely from Kuala Lumpur,” the eye witness said.

Prof Ghaghaa, a author of more than 20 Sikh-related books, was formerly a personal assistant to Akal Takht Jathedaar Manjit Singh for eight years and has been doing Gurmat parchaar for over 40 years. His views on the Sikh faith, which flies in the face of the interpretation of some Sikh groups, have caused the ire of these groups and invited criticism.

In Malaysia, some of the criticism has been directed at the Ek Granth Ek Panth ek Maryada slogan floated by the Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MC). These quarters perceive the slogan an affront to the Dasam Granth, a compilation of work formerly known as Bachitar Natak and attributed to Guru Gobind Singh, a claim disputed by some scholars.

Greentown was also the gurdwara where a group of Sikh youth had removed a MGC banner promoting the Ek Granth Ek Panth ek Maryada programme series and later burnt it at the gurdwara’s car park. The same group had uploaded a video of the them removing and burning the banner on Youtube prompting the gurdwara to lodge a police report.

The police report was lodged by Jagjit, one of the persons attacked in today’s incident.

The gathered Sikhs also did not allow the gurdwara stage secretary, managed by Greentown GMC secretary Daaljit Singh, to proceed with announcements.

Days before the speaking engagement, the social media amongst the local Sikhs in Malaysia was abuzz with calls to march towards the Greentown gurdwara, prompting the gurdwara to release a letter trying to calm the mood.

“It has come to our attention that some malicious lies are being circulated about Professor Ji. There is no any record of Bhai Sahib being banned by any country, Akaal Takhat or Gurdwaras that are aligned with Akaal Takhat. All that said is not verified.

“Gurdwara Sahib Greentown is affliated with Sikh Rehat Maryada and hereby fully endorses Professor Inderjit Singh Ghagga to deliver the talk. Any transgression against Gurmat and or Gurbani will be dealt with accordingly solely by the management committee,” the gurdwara sain the letter, a copy of which was seen by Asia Samachar.

Some senior officials of some local Sikh organisations, including from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Academy and Sant Attar Singh Ji Brahm Vidya Niketan Malaysia, were amongst those present at the gurdwara, as seen in video circulating after the event and also according to eye witness accounts.

Prof Ghagaa is scheduled to have two more sessions: Gurdwara Sahib Seremban (3 March, Friday, 7.30pm-8.30pm) and Gurdwara Sahib Ulu Klang (4 March, Saturday, 7.30pm-8.30pm).

Kaur Project: Recognising and celebrating Sikh women

| Canada | 2 March 2017 | Asia Samachar |
KAUR PROJECT: Some of the Sikh women featured are (L-R) Simi Kaur, Dlpreet Kaur and Bhavneet Kaur – PHOTOS FROM KAUR PROJECT WEBSITE

Meet three of the 50 Sikh women featured in the Kaur Project.

Canadian-based Simi Kaur a mother and an author, is working on a book that focuses on learning to count in Punjabi in a fun way for children.

Bhavneet Kaur, who took up gymnastics at the age of five, later took part in the All Star cheerleading, and at the Cheerleading Worlds Championships.

Dilpreet Kaur, who teaches children Punjabi, feels that kirtan is something that grounds her.

These ladies – with their well choreographed photos and their interesting stories – are captured at the Kaur Project website. See here.

DILPREET: “I was fortunate to grow up doing Kirtan with many different mentors. When I was young, I remember my Dad taking the time to explain what the shabads mean. At the time I didn’t understand why he was spending so much time trying to explain it to me. Now I am grateful for him doing this and inspiring me to take this direction, as studying Gurbani is the greatest gift he gave me as a father.”

BHAVNEET: “Doing things outside of traditional paths, lights fire inside of you to uncover parts of yourself, to yourself.”

The lady behind the camera is Saji Kaur Sahota while the story comes to life thanks to the storyelling by Jessie Kaur Lehail.

What prompted the project? Sikhs are ‘steeped in an old patriarchal culture that makes us complicit in the erasure of women, past and present’ despite the great deal of discussion about women’s equality, answers the proponents of the project.

“The few historicized Kaur stories, often are defined in relation to their male counterparts. Often their full contributions as thinkers, poets and warriors unto themselves have been eclipsed by historians, policy, and our communities.

“But, a new generation of Kaurs exist as teachers, lawyers, artists, entrepreneurs, doctors, homemakers, filmmakers and more, all carrying on the movement of revolutionary women. They have found brave new ways to reflect their identities while offering their own unique voices to public discourse. We are proud to call them our contemporaries — they are sources of inspiration, wisdom and leadership, who deserve to be known.

“The Kaurs highlighted by Kaur Project are modern-day heroines – and for each Kaur story we share, there are thousands more, blazing their own paths,” they say.

The project team has gone on what they call “kaur-spotting” where they explain to the prospective entrant about the project – about the importance of celebrating the diversity and inclusivity of Kaurs.

“Some Kaurs are flattered while others are suspicious. We always ask permission before taking a snap and sharing their story,” the say.

SIMRAN PROTEST: The scene in the Gurdwara Sahib Greentown in Ipoh, Perak, on 1 March 2017 where Prof Inder Singh Ghagaa was supposed to speak

First, Inder Singh Ghagaa is banned by Akal Takht, our supreme body, from doing any parchar in gurdwaras because of his anti Sikh and anti Gurmat parchar. He is also banned from doing parchar in Germany, U.K. and Canada.

Secondly, many police reports were made and police were informed of potential problems, should Ghagaa take the stage. It would be in direct defiance to Akal Takht order to maintain the sanctity of our gurdwaras. The police cautioned that they don’t want any trouble and allowed the prog to go on. Hence for half and hour only Simran was done by the sanggat.

Thirdly, a petition was prepared to be given to the president. The petition had clearly spelt out Ghagaa’s banned order. But because the president came in late, around 7.15pm, it couldn’t be handed in time.

Fourthly, since the program was allowed to go on by the management authority, the sanggat did Simran for half hour, which was done in gusto and everyone enjoyed and felt at peace.

SEE ALSO: Attempted assault on Dr Karminder Singh after talk at Selayang gurdwara

Fifth, at around 7.35pm, ardas was done and the hukumnama taken.  The hukumnama was “Koi janeh kawan eeha jag meet” on pg 700. The Deg was served and the coming programs announced by Daaljit Singh.

Sixth, the Jaap was continued. Many of us decided to move after Ghagaa was escorted out. Many of us felt complacent at that time and let down our guard. Just as Ghagaa was leaving, being escorted by his team, behind him a young boy sitting in the sanggat
went for Ghagaa for reasons only known to him. As Ghagaa was in front and his team behind him, he was shielded from the attack. They was a scuffle and within seconds it developed into a huge commotion as every one joined in to separate the parties. Now, during the scuffle, whose hand had hit which party/parties turban(s) and in what way, I can safely say unless there is a proper video recording, no one can say for sure. So let us not speculate and assume.

Seventh, the Akal Takht is our supreme body and its orders are to be obeyed without question. We have been taught this from birth. So who disobeyed this order to break the sanctity of our gurdwaras.

Ghagaa is banned from doing parchar in gurdwaras for his anti Sikh and anti Gurmat stands. Who had brought him into our country to destroy the harmony and peace among our Sikh community. Who is responsible to create all these ill feelings and disharmony among the whole Sikh community living in this country for the last 150 years by introducing new doctrines, home made slogans to rhyme with Gurbani but in reality are against our Sikh Reht Maryada (SRM).

Brothers, Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) has failed, Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) has failed, Asia Samachar has failed, Coalition o Malaysian Sikh Organisations (CMSO) has failed, many individuals having leadership positions have failed, other functioning bodies are unaware or too small or simply refused to stop this tide to be in sync and tow the line of Akal Takht our supreme body. The gathering (on 1 March) was done simply by concerned members who felt pain in their hearts and rose to the occasion to stop Ghagaa from doing katha.

There are two bodies that have been constantly blamed for no reasons at all. They are the only two bodies that are steady as a rock and stand like a mountain and refuse to give in to this tide of tacitly been lead down the road of these new anti Gurmat and defiance to orders from Akal Takht our supreme body.

The two bodies are Sant Attar Singh Ji Brahm Vidya Niketan Malaysia and Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Academy (SGGS Academy). I stand with them as now required.

So please do not misunderstand the motives of these two bodies Niketan and SGGS Academy. They work towards the harmony and peace among the whole Sikh community in Malaysia.

Lakhbir Singh, a former granthi and now a property consultant, is actively involved in Sikh activities, including in amrit sanchaar jathas.

Chanting to interrupt katha violates Sikh code of conduct, says MGC

Continuing chanting when a katha (Sikh-based lecture or a talk) is about to begin is a transgression of the Sikh Reht Maryada (SRM), says Malaysian Gurdwara Council (MGC).

“But when the Katha was to start and the chanting is continued, it becomes a disruption as the planned programme cannot go on and this is also a transgression of the Sikh Rehat Maryada which provides: Sanggat vich ek wakat eko gall honi chaiyeh – Kirtan Ja Katha Vakhyan Ja Pathh (ਕੀਰਤਨ ਜਾਂ ਕਥਾ ਵਖਿਆਨ ਜਾਂ ਪਾਠ),” the Kuala Lumpur based organisation said in a statement today.

A letter dated 2 March 2017 and entitled ‘MGC condemns act of BEADBI at Gurdwara Sahib’ was sent out to all gurdwaras in Malaysia. A copy was also sent to Asia Samachar.

On 1 March 2017, a group of Sikhs, believed to be largely from Kuala Lumpur, disrupted a planned speaking engagement by Prof Inder Singh Ghagaa at Gurdwara Sahib Greentown (Ashby Road) in Ipoh, Perak by chanting ‘Satnam Waheguru’.

When the programme ended, Inder the gurdwara vice president Jagjit Singh were attacked by some people, causing their turbans to be removed.

LETTER FROM MALAYSIAN GURDWARAS COUNCIL

02nd March 2017

To All Gurdwaras

The President, Gurdwara Sahib

……………………………………………….

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Re: MGC condemns act of BEADBI at Gurdwara Sahib

The Sanggat is well aware that at the end of the programme at Gurdwara Sahib Ashby Road yesterday night (1-03-2017) some 2-3 youths assaulted Professor Ghagga Ji in the Darbar Sahib resulting in Prof’s dastar thrown off. A guru ka Sikh cannot commit such an act in the Darbar of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and this assault is to be condemned by all Sikhs. More so as the victim involved is an elderly person, as Sikhs do not attack women, children and elderly.

The Gurbani tells us:

Ang 1114: Satgur agay sees bhet deyo je Satgur sachay bhavay

Ang 41: Bin Satgur palay na pavay manmukh rehay billaiye : oi Satgur aagey na nivay ona anter krod billaiye

The Gurbani clearly tells us that when in Darbar Sahib, one must bow in reverence and not act with krod and manmat.

The facts show that earlier on, in the Sanggat were also present senior officials of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Academy as reported by eye-witnesses, Asia Samachar and confirmed by the various videos of the occasion. There was then chanting of Satnam, which ordinarily should be encouraged. But when the Katha was to start and the chanting is continued, it becomes a disruption as the planned programme cannot go on and this is also a transgression of the Sikh Rehat Maryada which provides : –

Sanggat vich ek wakat eko gall honi chaiyeh – Kirtan Ja Katha Vakhyan Ja Pathh (ਕੀਰਤਨ ਜਾਂ ਕਥਾ ਵਖਿਆਨ ਜਾਂ ਪਾਠ).

The person who assaulted Prof. Ji on arrest, will be subject to Police interrogation and for Police to establish whether he acted on instigation or was alone.

We understand Prof. Ji was on an invitation by an organization although it was not Malaysian Gurdwara Council (MGC). Gurdwara Parbhandaks to note that a lot of lies are being spread by some malicious groups to malign MGC. All these lies should be ignored by the Parbandhaks.

The Total memberships of all the Gurdwaras affiliated to MGC are more than 30,000. Thus Sanggat must unite and support the Gurdwara Parbandhaks against such Taliban attacks in the Darbar of a Gurdwara.

Dhanwad

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak approved an allocation of RM200,000 for the repair of a gurdwara in Kuala Lumpur that was damaged in a storm in June last year.

The prime minister spent about 30 minutes at Gurdwara Sahib Kuyow in Sungai Besi on Monday (1 March 2017).

A video clip of the visit was shared at Najib’s personal Facebook page.

The gurdwara building, located along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban highway, was partially damaged in a hailstorm at around 6.30pm on 2 June 2016. The thunderstorm blew off the roof over the darbar sahib which damaged the plaster ceiling and the carpet, according to an earlier report at Asia Samachar.

During the visit, Najib said the renovation work would help the Sikh community to carry out their religious events and weddings in a more comfortable atmosphere, reports Free Malaysia Today.

“A majority of them have served long with the military and police forces. They have served the country, and it is only right that we recognise their deeds,” he was quoted in the report.

Najib said the harmony among the people of the various communities and religions was a pillar of national unity and integration.

“We have to practise mutual respect among all groups of society regardless of religion, culture or skin colour because we are Malaysians and are committed to our country.”

Gurdwara Sahib Kuyow management committee secretary Mukhtear Singh Jit Singh expressed his gratitude for the assistance, the report added.

“Although we are a minority, our plight is championed by the Barisan Nasional government.”

He said the renovated gurdwara would help the estimated 500 members of the Sikh community in the vicinity to conduct their religious activities.

Let us strive for unity and love, says SNSM chief Dr Jasbir Singh

JASBIR SINGH: A long serving volunteer at Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia

Sikhs have ‘forgotten the purpose of life’ and need to ‘acquire divine knowledge’ that has to be applied in daily life.

The observation was made by the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) Jathedar Dr Jasbir Singh in a note sent to members and the general Sanggat.

“From our observations it tells us that we all have forgotten the purpose of life,” he said in the note which comes on the heels of some keenly debated events within the Sikh circles in Malaysia. A copy of the note was also seen by Asia Samachar.

SEE ALSO: Dr Jasbir Singh elected unanimously as SNSM Jathedar

The measured statement underlined the youth body’s objectives to advance Sikhi parchaar and youth development.

“Let us remain focused and strive for unity and love,” said Dr Jasbir who was elected unanimously as the SNSM annual general meeting in August 2016.

THE FULL STATEMENT

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) was established to serve the youth. Its main objectives are Parchaar and youth development.

From our observations it tells us that we all have forgotten the purpose of life. Guru Ji says “Bhaee prapat Manukh dehuria, Gobind Milan ki eeh teri bariyaa” Hence, our objective is to be Jivan Mukhat.

We may read gurbani, we may understand gurbani but we have not applied in our Jivan. We have forgotten the One that created us, Kartar Purakh. If we understand this, we are all His children and to abide his Hukam. His Hukam is to see One in all. Let us contemplate, reflect whether we are doing this.

As humans we are given the intellect to think and analyse for ourselves. Therefore, to be able to think wisely, the need to acquire divine knowledge and most important, applying it or else it is merely information.

It is time to reflect again, to see if we are going to achieve the goal of life. If not, let us all come together, help each other to achieve this common goal of human life.

SNSM would like to invite all the youth to participate in the upcoming events that we have lined up for you ie; Holla Mahalla and Grand Vaisakhi Event.

Let us remain focused and strive for unity and love.

Ek Pita Ekas Ke Ham Barak.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

Seremban Sikhs stood their ground to allow Inder Singh Ghagaa to speak

SEREMBAN SESSION: Prof Inder SIngh Ghagaa speaking at Gurdwara Sahib Seremban, Malaysia, on 3 March 2017, with a group of protestors chanting ‘Satnam Waheguru’ outside. INSERT: Prof Inder receiving a sirapao from the gurdwara.

Seremban Sikhs denied entry to a group from out of town to avoid any potential disruption to the planned talk by Prof Inder Singh Ghagaa, an author and Sikh parcharak deemed controversial by some quarters.

The action was prompted by an incident at an Ipoh gurdwara on Monday when the same group disrupted the speaker’s talk session by loud chants of ‘Satnam Waheguru’.

“Let those inside [the Darbar Sahib] listen, don’t insult their intelligence. We love our Guru just as much as you guys,” one Gurdwara Sahib Seremban volunteer told some members from outstation group. The conversation was shared with Asia Samachar by one of the Seremban youth present on the ground.

“He gave a beautiful talk….Most of the Sanggat members were happy with the session,” another Seremban-based Sikh told Asia Samachar.

Prof Ghagaa, an author of more than 20 Sikh-related books, was formerly a personal assistant to Akal Takht Jathedaar Manjit Singh for eight years and has been doing Gurmat parchaar for over 40 years. His views on the Sikh faith, which flies in the face of the interpretation of some Sikh groups, have caused the ire of these groups and invited criticism.

On Monday, he was attacked when walking out of the darbar sahib at Gurdwara Sahib Greentown (Ashby Road), causing his turban to be removed. A gurdwara official was also attacked at the same time.

This time around, however, there were no untoward incident in Seremban, the state capital of Negeri Sembilan, which is about an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur.

The outstation group, led by Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Academy head Paramjit Singh, initially tried to force their way into the gurdwara, arguing that they have a right to ‘darshan’ the Guru and join the Sanggat.

However, the local Seremban Sikh volunteers denied them entry, forcing them to remain outside the gurdwara side entrance.

“They challenged us, telling us that we have no right to stop them. We stood our ground. They tried telling us that the parcharak was divisive. We told them to let us decide on that ourselves,” said a Seremban gurdwara official.

The gurdwara management committee had also put up a notice that the programme was for Sikhs from Seremban and its surrounding areas, and is by invitation only.

At around 7.40pm, the outstation group began saying ‘Satnam Waheguru’ loudly at the side entrance along Lorong Khalsa.

In a statement released yesterday,  Malaysian Gurdwara Council (MGC) suggested that continuing chanting when a katha (Sikh-based lecture or a talk) is about to begin is a transgression of the Sikh Reht Maryada (SRM).

Many policemen, both in uniform and plain cloth, were seen around the gurdwara.

Touching history

By I.J. Singh

Every day the past beckons anew.

Today we revisit the life and times of Banda Singh Bahadur, an iconic figure from the 18th century.  He strode on the Sikh stage for only a decade.

History determines where we are at any moment and which way we may be headed.  Now, 300 years later, distance in both time and space help us explore Banda Bahadur’s life meaningfully and dispassionately.  His achievements continue to shape us, while his missteps(?) haunt us.

First some reflections on the nature and purpose of history before we visit Banda Bahadur’s eventful life.

History interlinks the three beads of time — past, present, and future. If the linkage breaks, life loses its continuity and purpose.  So, history is not just a random collection of dates and events, pestilence and war; birth and death; cruel or stupid acts of egomaniacs; moments of inhumanity that are better forgotten.  History is often a personal, familial or tribal narrative, some notable, some horrendous.

Why should we rummage in the dustbin of the past for lessons to the future? Because there is nowhere else to look.  History is written by victors, proclaims a common truism. Given human bias and our eel-like slippery memory, no history is entirely true or always verifiable.

History is society’s collective memory, of our social conventions and their lessons, of skills for life and work.  History is full of imagination, pleasures, dreams, or demons.  Not a narrow specialty, history addresses the larger concerns of humanity – its needs, wants, fears and hopes, our existential imperatives. Events that transcend time and space, that demand versatile skills or dumb luck.  Politics and business look to history to build a future, much as a cook revisits history for a successful recipe.  Generals and scientists need it, as do artists and poets. Without history, there would be no empathy.  And that would be a poorer world, if there were to be a world at all.

By connecting us to others, history shapes human development.  History sees life through our eyes and that of many. The foundation of Renaissance rests on a history of failed and successful lives.  History talks about matters that we don’t want to know about but might need to know about. History stops us from making narrow interpretations about our lives.  It is the only textbook of human nature that we have, one that is constantly updated.

“Those who do not remember their history are condemned to repeat it,” said George Santayana.  We connect with our past through stories and traditions; it is the only way to touch history.

Let’s turn to the life and contributions of Banda Bahadur, without a doubt one of the premier iconic figures in Sikhism, bar the Gurus.  At age 15 he abandoned his home and became an ascetic; he was so moved by the suffering of a dying doe that he had shot while hunting.   He became a yogi and established a monastery (mutth) in Nander near the bank of the river Godavri.

On September 3, 1708, Madho Das met Guru Gobind Singh. His one brief encounter with Guru Gobind Singh was utterly transformational, indeed magical, and he became a totally devoted Sikh, hence the name Banda as in man or slave of the Guru.  I see no comparable phenomenon in human history; indeed, and no other parallel in Sikhi like him.  The Guru escorted Banda to his own camp nearby, where he was initiated into the Order of the Khalsa.

The Guru awarded him a battle drum, a banner and five arrows as emblems of authority, along with directives to the people of Punjab to cooperate with Banda.  He deputed five prominent Sikhs – Dya Singh, Binod Singh, Kahn Singh, Baaj Singh and Ram Singh — to accompany Banda Singh and dispatched them to Punjab on a mission for justice. And to lead the Sikhs and wage war, if necessary, in the name of the Guru.

Moments like these are rare in human annals but they have a claim on us.  The renunciate, Banda Bahadur, became a phenomenally successful warrior and leader.  Banda Singh Bahadur lived and died for Guru Gobind Singh and Sikhs.

In the face of unchallenged Islamic political power, driven by passionate frenzy to convert the Hindu multitudes, what was Banda and his small but growing band to do?  Banda Bahadur appealed to the Hindu satraps and local rulers to join him in the cause for justice and religious freedom.  None stepped forward. This would be a disheartening moment in Banda’s mission but he remained undeterred.

As he reached the borders of Sirhind this Banda-led people’s crusade had become a raging storm.  History says that they leveled Sirhind.  History also tells us that the nearby Muslim principality of Malerkotla was spared, protected by Sikhs then, and again in 1947 which claimed millions of Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus during the large-scale rioting during the struggle for India’s independence.  Why such kindness towards Malerkotla, a Muslim base then and now?  Simply because the ruling Nawab had refused to endorse the sentence of death for two sons, 6 and 7 years old, of Guru Gobind Singh.

Banda won his first set battle at Chappar Chiri (aka Chappar Jhiri) on May 12, 1710; a memorial to this historic site dates only from 2009. Two days later Sirhind belonged to the Sikhs with Baaj Singh as its governor.

Banda Singh Bahadur established the very first Sikh ruled territory in 1716; he was a wise ruler not only to the Sikhs but to his Hindu and Muslim subjects as well.  He deserves recognition for the first ever land reforms in India; this granted rights of ownership to those that tilled the land, not merely to those that owned it. He issued a silver coin, but in the names of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh, not his own.

Today we remember Banda Singh Bahadur three centuries after he burst on the scene and electrified it. It is way past the time to recognize that his footprints revolutionized India, and particularly Punjab for the better.

On June 21, 2016, the Government of India honored Banda Singh Bahadur with a silver coin in his name.  A magnificent memorial — 17-foot-tall statue standing on a 23-foot pedestal — was unveiled on December 18, 2016 in New Delhi, the capital city of India.  A rare, well deserved honor.  Remember that Sikhs do not approve of statues of Gurus or other religious idols; lest these iconoclasts be transformed into icons that people might worship. Yet, it is a human need to celebrate them because they are markers of high purpose, enviable achievement and supreme sacrifice.

Unfortunately, Banda’s life knew little peace.   He and Sikhs endured a siege that lasted eight months.  Finally, he was taken prisoner along with 740 Sikhs and his own four-year-old son.  History speaks also of 700 cartloads of heads of Sikhs and another 2000 stuck upon spikes.

Banda was offered the choice of converting to Islam or death.  His response was that of a Sikh warrior.  His infant son was hacked to pieces before his eyes.  His own hands and feet were chopped off; his flesh torn with red hot pincers.

On June 9, 1716, the warrior met his maker.  Not a Punjabi, but one that we are proud to own.

There is also another side to the coin.

Many controversies about Banda Bahadur remain largely unresolved. What circumstances dictated the razing of Sirhind?  What would Sikh values and history say?    Some documents suggest a rift between him and Mata Sundri, the widow of Guru Gobind Singh.  The Sikh community apparently split between the loyalists of Banda (Bandayee Khalsa), and those who were not (Tat Khalsa).  The reigning monarch was reputed to have advanced a formula for peace.  Was that the root of the rift between Banda and other Sikhs? Mata Sundri reputedly appointed Bhai Mani Singh as the arbiter; however, history remains unclear on the details. Did Banda issue any Hukumnamas, as was the wont of the Gurus?  Then there are minor issues like, who did he marry, when and where?  What happened to her?

These and other gaps in history demand a good faith effort to resolve them.

But Banda’s ascendance was followed by almost a century when Sikhs were a hunted people; their survival was on the line.  Also, from times immemorial India has not valued written history that tries to hew faithfully to facts as we unearth them.  This cultural shortcoming that persists today is well recognized as the bane of historians.

Also, don’t forget the reminder by T.S. Eliot of the “cunning passages and contrived corridors of history that deceive us by vanities.”

With a gap of some years another period of Sikh self-governance dawned during Nawab Kapur Singh’s time; and 92 years after Banda emerged Ranjit Singh, who ruled wisely over greater Punjab for almost half a century.

By any measure of a life, Banda Singh Bahadur was a man larger than life.

In my introduction to this priceless issue of Nishaan, my first instinct was to pick some choice citations from the articles within it and whet your appetite by a short patched narrative around them.  I let that tempting path slip away simply because the possibilities were too many and overwhelming.  I hope that this introduction to a complex man and his trying times would send you running to the contents within.

In penning this Editorial I concede that I learned a lot, as I am sure so will you, of Sikh history and its intricacies from the erudite writings that you will accost within this issue.

Remember that the past is a prologue to the future.  Exploring and connecting with the past takes us forward (“Babaaniya kahaaniya puty saputh karein” Guru Granth p. 951).

Enjoy!

Selangor Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Superintendent Kamaludin Mohamad said initial investigation revealed that Suvinder’s car had collided with another car before crashing into a Land Rover SUV.

“The Camry and the other car veered into the middle lane after the collision. The impact of the crash caused the Land Rover to overturn after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

“The driver of the Toyota Fortuner, who was attempting to avoid crashing, lost control of his SUV and skidded into the emergency lane,” he said.

Kamaludin said Suvinder’s body has been taken to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem.

He said investigation into the case is still ongoing.

03rd March 2017

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa

Re   :Inaccurate and deceptive Statement

There is an inaccurate and deceptive statement out in the whatsapp by NIKETAN that Prof. Inder Singh Ghagga is banned by Akal Takhat from speaking in Gurdwaras.

The actual facts are as below:-

  1. A complaint was sent by the Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council (OSGC) and others to Akal Takht relating to a book considered offensive.
  1. The Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council than met with Prof. Inder Singh Ghagga on 20-10-2006 and after a lengthy discussion and all questions being answered fairly including apology tendered by the professor and undertaking given by him to do changes requested in the forthcoming edition of the book.

This matter was then considered closed by the COMPLAINANT. Ontario Sikh and Gurdwara Council. (Refer to Appendix-A attached)

MGC: Inaccurate and deceptive statement on Ghagaa banned by Akal Takht – APPENDIX A

They subsequently informed Akal Takht about it.

  1. Meanwhile, the next day on 21-10-2006 in ignorance of matter having been resolved a day earlier, a Sandesh was issued by Akal Takht requiring Professor Ji to express regret and not to carry on with such writing.

[ Note : This Sandesh had been complied with by the Professor one day earlier ] (Refer to Appendix-B attached).

MGC: Inaccurate and deceptive statement on Ghagaa banned by Akal Takht – APPENDIX B
  1. Our enquiry and research on internet shows that no Hukamnama was then issued against Prof. Inder Singh, proving that the COMPLAINANT had communicated to Akal Takht about the agreement reached a day earlier and the apology given by Prof. Inder Singh.
  1. Thus, it is clear that only making public Akal Takht letter (Appendix-B), without including Appendix-A which shows compliance with conditions set by Akal Takht is clear DECEPTION on the Sanggat.
  1. Thus, there is no Hukamnama from Akal Takht barring Prof. Inder Singh Ghagga Ji. The Sandesh issued by Akal Takht which is advisory in nature has been complied with and matter of the Sandesh has been considered resolved.

Thus, the persons protesting, should tell Sanggat the truth based on Appendix-A and Appendix-B and that the matter was resolved by the complainant and Akal Takht informed.

The MGC will write to Akal Takht next week to confirm that the matter relating to Sandesh against Inder Singh Ghagga was resolved in 2006, as stated above.

A man who lacks knowledge of history is as good to the world as the dead. History, that since the beginning of time, has been there to offer many lessons. The Sikhs too have a rich history bustling with passion for freedom, truth and humanity. With that, the Sikh culture in terms of domestic lifestyles, is largely influenced by the Indian culture, reason being that the majority of Sikhs reside there. However, the two are not to be mistaken as parallel or as two branches of the same tree.

Sadly, despite the fact that the Sikhs’ treasure of history loaded with thousands of gems of martyrdoms, today’s youth grows detached from the Guru, the congregation, and hence the Sikh way of life. This is mainly owing to the continuous portrayal of Sikhs as followers of Indian culture through manipulation of ancient historical reference books, the distribution of misleading literature under the label of “Sikh history” and the widely accepted concept being Sikh means you can practice the Punjabi culture.  The poem weeps such loss.

Tragic

The history of aeons and pre, lost.

Leaving but a speck…

Today her children run

Night clubs, bars and vice-deeds,

They seek peace.

Alas! Life is hectic!

A race! A competition!

Live they, as though

They know

best still.

Contentment

A game of balance

Of acceptance and of

Thankfulness

Reconnecting to roots

One learns.

Useless, vicious and mundane

Four charged in North Brunswick, a township in New Jersey, United States, for allegedly throwing eggs at more than 70 cars.

Four men nicknamed the “Mad eggers” were charged in North Brunswick, a township in New Jersey, United States, for allegedly throwing eggs at more than 70 cars in the Hidden Lake section of town.

Taranbir Singh, 18, of Carteret, and Hamza Ahmed, 20, also of Carteret, were arrested Thursday evening. Manraj Singh, 19, of Carteret, and Simranjit Singh, 21, of Sayreville, were arrested Friday afternoon.

All four were charged with numerous counts of criminal mischief and have since been released, reports News12 New Jersey.

Police say that they do not believe that the four men have any ties to North Brunswick other than randomly choosing to target cars in the town. Authorities believe there are more victims who have not reported the incidents to police, the report added.

Here are some of the comments that the news report invited:

Kaplan: I guess these 4 idiots didn’t think there was enough anti-immigrant feelings so they had to give more reason for racists to target Hindus, Muslims, etc. I hope their families are proud of them.

Basi: Just throwing eggs to the cars???…. come on police guys,,, kids were having fun….go arrest other bigger criminals…..leave these kids alone….

Kaplan: Mr. Basi, you’ve got to be kidding. What if one of those cars were moving and the driver lost control and ended up in an accident? Even if the cars were parked, an egg has the ability to damage the finish of the car if left to dry on it. Let’s stop giving a pass to behavior that is antisocial, stupid and illegal just because in YOUR opinion it’s “No big deal”.

Kang: I hope now system will make them pay the price…..and teach them lesson….

LETTER DATED 5 MARCH 2017 FROM GURDWARA SAHIB SEREMBAN ON ISSUES SURROUNDING TALK BY PROF INDER SINGH GHAGAA

WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

RE –  Incident at Gurdwara Sahib Seremban on March 3, 2017

We, the Gurdwara Sahib Seremban (GSS)  Committee, would like to clarify on the misleading allegations made against us with regards to the recent talk by Professor Inder Singh Ghagga held at our premises on Friday, March 3, 2017.

Certain quarters have in recent days, been making repeated malicious and derogatory statements via the social media on the decision by the elected GSS committee to invite the above mentioned speaker for a talk here.

While we have also received loads of support from as many quarters, we feel compelled to reply to our critics who have been making false allegations and misleading remarks against us.

SEE ALSO: Seremban Sikhs stood their ground to allow Inder Singh Ghagaa to speak

Firstly, we would like to categorically state that Gurdwara Sahib Seremban (GSS) only allows Kirtan and Parchaar in line with Sikh Rehat Maryada (SRM) and Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji (SGGS) in our Darbar Sahib. Whatever programme that is held in GSS is collectively decided by the committee around Gurbani Vichaar for the benefit of the sanggat. No Katha or Kirtan outside of SRM is allowed in GSS.

Secondly, there were false allegations being spread via the social media against GSS Committee before the programme. We were left with no other option but to restrict attendance to the talk following the violent incident at Gurdwara Sahib Ashby Road in Ipoh several days earlier. There, the planned session was disrupted resulting in the local Sanggat not benefitting from it and the Speaker was attacked with his turban removed and beard pulled in the Darbaar Sahib in full view of the Sanggat. This is clearly not within the practices of our faith or the teachings of our Gurus.

Following the incident at Gurdwara Sahib Ashby Road, we as the GSS committee decided to take the necessary measures to prevent a similar occurrence at GSS.  We will neither tolerate nor allow the sanctity of our Darbaar Sahib and the safety of our Sanggat to be compromised in any way or by any one.

As painful as it was, it was decided to bar certain individuals who were linked with the ugly incident in Ipoh from entering GSS. This was done with the intent to safeguard the safety of Sanggat, particularly women and children from violence that may have transpired. In fact, we had also been alerted that their only objective was to stop Professor Ghagga from speaking at GSS by any means possible.

The GSS committee had collectively decided to proceed with the talk which was based solely on Gurbani of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji as per SRM. We always perform our due diligence to advise any Parcharak who comes to our Gurdwara to follow these rules. Therefore, by ensuring that only Gurbani Vichaar from Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji and SRM is allowed, we believe that no one should impose their beliefs on others through intimidation.

As for the alleged ban by Sri Akal Takhat Sahib on Professor Ghagga, we would like to mention that based on our own checks, Sri Akal Takhat had only issued him a SANDESH (not HUKAMNAMA) in 2006 after he made some errors in a book. Professor Ghagga was advised to correct them and duly complied. Since there is no HUKAMNAMA from Sri Akal Takhat, we found that there was no reason to ban him from our Gurdwara.

Thirdly, on the advice of the relevant authorities, a notice was placed at the entrance to the GSS clearly stating that this programme was only for the local Sanggat. Again, as stated earlier, the intent of this was solely for the safety and best interest of the Sanggat. It is the responsibility of the GSS Committee to preserve and safeguard the sanctity of SGGS  Ji as well as to take necessary measures to safeguard the physical interest of the Sanggat. We would like to record our appreciation to our volunteers who stood their ground patiently although being repeatedly provoked by individuals whose sole intent was to disrupt this programme at GSS.

In conclusion, we thank Waheguru that the programme went on smoothly without incident.

However, it is our hope that the leading Sikh organisations in Malaysia would be able to collectively decide on issues affecting the community, for the sake of our current and future generations. Some of these issues have had serious implications and have divided us to the core. We can no longer operate as a fragmented society as this would be to the detriment of our Sikh community.

We trust that we have provided clarity to the Malaysian Sanggat with respect to the Committee’s decision to bar certain individuals from attending the talk at GSS.  It is time for all Sikhs to close ranks and we sincerely hope our critics will now stop making unsubstantiated claims against us.

Harnarinder driving Malaysian palm oil certification

$

| Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia | 8 March 2017 | Asia Samachar |
BRIEFING: Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council (MPOCC) CEO Harnarinder Singh (right) briefing Malaysia’s Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Mah Siew Keong at the Palm and Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (POC) organised annually in Kuala Lumpur by Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Berhad (BMD).

Harnarinder Singh, the man tasked to certify Malaysian palm oil for the world, has been steering the Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council (MPOCC) since its formation two years ago.

Appointed as CEO in October 2015, Harnarinder’s key task is to bring home the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme to as many palm oil operators in the country.

“We now have more than 220,000 ha MSPO certified, with 21 palm oil mills. This is just the beginning,” he tells Asia Samachar at a major palm oil related event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

MPOCC is taking part in the two-day Palm and Lauric Oils Price Outlook Conference & Exhibition (POC) in Kuala Lumpur organised by Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Berhad (BMD).

Malaysia is the second largest world producer of palm oil after Indonesia with a total oil palm planted area of 5.74 million ha.

SEE ALSO:

Harnarinder, popularly known as Harry amongst friends, is also an active volunteer in the Sikh community, is the vice president of the Gurdwara Sahib Ampang (GSA) in Hulu Kelang, Selangor. He had also taken up roles in the camps organised by the Sikh Naujawan Sabha Malaysia (SNSM) as well as its Khalsa Land project in Kuala Kubu Bahru, Selangor.

MPOCC is an independent non-profit organisation established in December 2014 to develop and operate the MSPO certification scheme. Its mission is to establish and operate a credible and internationally recognised national palm oil certification scheme towards promoting sustainable management of oil palm in Malaysia.

At this juncture, one of the key challenges for Harnarinder and his team at MPOCC is to gain acceptance for the MSPO certification.

The Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) is seeking the support of the oil palm industry to make MSPO certification mandatory and charting the way forward in its implementation so that a large portion of the oil palm planted areas can become MSPO certified and allow for Malaysia to export a substantial quantity of certified sustainable palm oil in the coming years.

The plan was outlined by MPIC minister Mah Siew Keong at a consultation session with various palm oil stakeholders on the Way Forward for Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) Certification in Putrajaya Marriott in February 2017.

The minister said that this year being the 100th year of commercial oil palm cultivation in Malaysia, it was important to safeguard the palm oil industry and at the same time, to fulfill the increasing global demand for sustainable palm oil.

As a major palm oil producer, Mah had told the conference that was a need to safeguard and further alleviate the image of the industry to a higher level through mandatory MSPO certification.

In his presentation at the same conference, Harnarinder projected a target supply of 8.0 million tonnes of MSPO certified palm oil based on a total certified area of 2.0 million ha and 160 MSPO certified mills by the end of 2019.
